What are LAUSD salary points?

A salary point is a unit of measurement used by the Los Angeles Unified School District to determine placement/advancement on the LAUSD salary table. A salary point is equivalent to one semester unit.

How do you earn LAUSD salary points?

LAUSD teachers can take a variety of professional development courses to receive salary points. These range from University Courses to LAUSD approved online courses to teaching your own salary point approved class!

How much more can you earn with LAUSD salary points?

To learn how much more you can earn with LAUSD salary points, you need to first visit view the LAUSD salary table, and then find the table that applies to you. You can then use the applicable table to calculate how much more you can earn for each salary step you complete (each salary step typically requires 14 salary points).

Tip: To make sure that you maximize your salary and retirement, aim to reach 98 salary points (the maximum) as soon as you can. By earning 98 salary points early in your career, you can increase your lifetime earnings by $200,000 to $300,000.

How do you make sure you get credit for your LAUSD salary points?

There are a few different forms that you can submit to get credit for LAUSD salary points. The forms depend on the type of professional development or class that you participated in.  Here’s a list of the different types of classes you can take:

U Points: These are university credit classes that you have taken in addition to a Bachelor’s degree. Make sure you search on the LAUSD website to see if the class will be accepted for credit.

P Point Classes: P classes are given by LAUSD employees and are approved by the JSPCC. Instructors will submit the documents needed for P form classes and you should also get a receipt as confirmation of the submission. These classes fall under two categories of either (15 hours of class time with 30 hours of homework/preparation or 30 hours of class time with no homework/preparation.)

NA Point Classes: These are classes from non-accredited institutions but can have their courses approved by the JSPCC. Some instructors will also submit this form for you and you should also receive a receipt or confirmation that they have done so.

NA Points Through PD:  These are points that you can get from professional development outside of paid teaching hours. Every 30 hours is equal to one salary point. Make sure you collect all verification of attendance such as certificates, instructors’ signatures and transcripts so that you can get your salary points. When you can, submit a proposal form before and then a verification form after.

T Points: T points are related to traveling for teaching. They need to be planned ahead of time and need to meet certain requirements.
