STEAM Everyday for Everyone – Online Professional Development Course

This 1-credit online course provides practical tips, ideas, and resources for how to integrate STEAM into all of your lesson plans and curriculum. Click Here to View Syllabus LAUSD Course Code: NA-11-123 UMass Global University Course Code: EDTU 9026 Course Description In years past, core subjects such as science, math, and engineering were distinctly separate from the arts, and seemingly students had an interest in one type of education or the other, but never both. Research has shown, however, that students who have access to the arts, as well as science and math, are more invested in learning, more motivated to come to school, and more apt to perform better in all subjects. That’s why STEAM education is become more commonplace, as it rapidly gains ground inside elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools, and as districts around the country add STEAM schools. If you’d like to learn more about STEAM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Math) and how to incorporate it into your teaching, this online professional development course is for you. The class is based on the notion that every student is a scientist-artist, but that the joy of creativity and artistic expression are often squelched as students are introduced to more rigid and less stimulating approaches to learning. But why can’t the “artist” in everyone flourish, not only in school, but also in life…not only when students are young, but also throughout their lives. In this online STEAM course, you’ll learn how to assimilate the arts and sciences into your lesson plans and curriculum, in order to provide a richer learning experience for your students. Designed for all types of teachers, this online professional development course on STEAM covers a variety of topics, including:

UMass Global University Course Code: EDUU 9975

    Course Description

Every day, an increasing number of students experience trauma that may adversely affect their learning, relationships, and life-trajectories.

According to the Department of Justice, more than half of children in the U.S. were exposed to trauma in the past year, and 40% are direct victims of multiple acts of violence (higher percentages are represented in urban schools). This study also shows that students exposed to violence are more likely to be delinquent, struggle in and drop out of school; as well as to suffer from anxiety, depression, and PTSD, abuse drugs and alcohol, and engage in criminal activities (https://www.justice.gov/archives/defendingchildhood/facts-about-children-and-violence). Trauma can greatly affect students' ability to learn. But through trauma-informed instruction, teachers and other educators can be factors of healing towards success, despite these odds. This course guides educators through a paradigm shift, toward deeper understanding, heightened sensitivity, and increased efficacy in teaching students affected by trauma.

There were many examples of best practices, and it makes me believe I can be a better educator. Some of the standouts for me were: Chris Emdin, Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot, Rita Pierson, the school that showed community-based learning, and Dan Meyer’s talk regarding math practices.”  “This course helped me learn a lot about myself as a teacher and how I do not have to be the one that does all the talking and teaching. I need to learn to step back and give my students more control to explore contents of their choice.”  “I am so excited to utilize project-based learning, community-based learning and authentic learning with my kiddos. I know it will be personalized for their needs, motivating and authentic. Thank you for this invaluable course; I feel like I will never teach the same again!
